Yacht Charter Corfu: Top Routes for Unforgettable Sailing

The Ionian Sea - Northern Part: Corfu and South

The Ionian Sea is situated between western Greece (and western Albania) and the southeastern part of Italy. To its north lies the Adriatic Sea, and to its south continues the Mediterranean Sea, which is, in fact, an extension of it. Its northern section stretches between Lefkada in the south and Corfu in the north, adorned with islands that some would argue are the most beautiful in Greece – Paxos and Antipaxos. The region is not as abundant in islands as most of Greece’s areas. A typical sailing week will usually head south along the eastern coast of Corfu, sailing to Paxos and Anti Paxos, and back. However, the landscapes and coves are some of the most breathtaking you will find in Greece, making the visit truly worthwhile.

The weather throughout the season is generally calm, unlike the southern part of the Ionian Sea. Most of the time is characterized by a north-northwesterly wind of 10-15 knots on average, which can occasionally increase and become stronger.

The central marina for setting sail in the area is a well-equipped marina adjacent to the picturesque Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nestled within the heart of a vast and charming bay, it is situated along the central eastern coastline of Corfu. The island itself is one of Greece’s largest, boasting breathtaking beauty that truly warrants a day of exploration amidst towering mountains, enchanting villages, ancient ruins, and turquoise beaches. At the very least, on the day of the boat reception, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the beauty of Corfu.

Visitors departing from Lefkada harbor can also embark on a northern sailing route to explore the area, rather than heading south towards the southern islands.

The popular sailing route follows a circuit from Corfu southwards to Paxi and Anti Paxi. Exploring one of the captivating destinations on the continent and returning to Corfu. However, as you can see, you can also incorporate lesser-known destinations in the northern or western part of Corfu, as well as the more northern group of islands. Keep in mind that the western and northern sides are entirely open to the west and north, and most of the time, they are exposed to strong winds and waves.

The prime season for sailing in the area extends from May through September, with July and August being particularly bustling. This heightened activity is influenced by the relatively small number of islands, marinas, and bays in the region compared to other areas. In our opinion, the most recommended months for sailing in the area are late May to early June or September, during the shoulder season, to avoid the crowds.

Essential Documents and Regulations

Before embarking on your Corfu sailing holiday, make sure you have all the necessary documents and are aware of the local regulations. A valid US passport is required for visits to Greece, and US citizens do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. If you plan to sail, you’ll need a sailing license recognized by local port authorities. This ensures that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the waters safely. Additionally, be aware of the regulations regarding night sailing, mooring, and fishing. For instance, there are specific rules about the minimum size requirements for certain fish and octopus, aimed at preserving marine life. Familiarizing yourself with these regulations will help you enjoy a smooth and hassle-free sailing experience in Corfu.

Provisioning and Baggage

Provisioning is an essential part of your Corfu sailing holiday, and there are plenty of options available on the island. You can stock up on food, drinks, and other essentials at local supermarkets and markets, ensuring you have everything you need for your journey. When it comes to baggage, it’s recommended to bring soft bags only, as suitcases can be cumbersome on board. Soft bags are easier to store and handle in the limited space of a sailing yacht. Don’t forget to pack essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Additionally, bring a power adapter for charging your devices, as Corfu uses Type F power sockets. With proper provisioning and packing, you’ll be well-prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable Corfu sailing holiday.
