Volos and the Sporades island group are located on the eastern side of Greece, north of Athens and south of the Thessaloniki Gulf. The area is about a 4-hour scenic drive from Athens, or alternatively, accessible via a domestic flight.

    Volos Yacht Charter

One of Greece’s Most Beautiful and Unique Sailing Regions

This is truly one of the most stunning and unique regions in all of Greece. It’s somewhat surprising that it hasn’t yet developed into an international sailing hub on the scale of other popular areas.

If you’ve already sailed from Athens, Lefkada, Kos, or similar bases and are looking for something new—or if you still feel there’s more of Greece to discover—this region is no less remarkable than any of the others mentioned.

Known as the greenest region in Greece, the Sporades offer lush vegetation, wild nature, incredible landscapes, and diverse wildlife, along with rich culture, picturesque villages, historic landmarks, and archaeological sites. It’s a winning combination that rivals even the most famous sailing areas in the country.

That said, this is a less developed area for sailing, with fewer marinas and limited well-protected anchorages. For this reason, it’s best suited for experienced crews or skippers who are already comfortable with sailing in Greece and are confident handling Mediterranean mooring in varied conditions and locations.

    Winds & Weather

The dominant wind in the area during summer is typically from the north, and strong Meltemi winds can sometimes appear in the afternoon.

However, the chain of islands can provide effective shelter from northerlies, allowing for a relatively calm week of sailing along the southern sides of the islands if needed.
On days with strong northern winds, sailing on the northern sides of the islands can be less comfortable and more challenging.

    Charter Bases in the Sporades

There are two main charter bases in the region:

    1. Volos – The Main Charter Hub

Volos is the largest and most active base, home to most of the charter companies operating in the area. It’s a developed city with a large commercial port and serves as the primary gateway to the Sporades.

Volos is located inside a large, sheltered gulf, meaning you can set sail almost regardless of the weather. Even if offshore conditions are rough, it’s possible to spend several pleasant days sailing within the bay itself.

Note: Volos is a big city, and the marina has more of a commercial feel. It’s not a quaint Greek fishing village. But as soon as you cast off and head out into the gulf, you’re immediately surrounded by wild, breathtaking nature. Just be aware that the atmosphere at the marina is a bit different from more picturesque departure points.

    2. Skiathos – A Beautiful Alternative Base

Skiathos is a stunning island with its own airport, making it accessible by both ferry and domestic flights. It’s the only island in the Sporades with an airport, and its main town is lively and beautiful—a great place to start your charter.

It’s worth arriving a day or two early to explore the town and island before setting sail.
Departing from Skiathos shortens your sailing distances to the nearby islands, allowing you to spend more time among the Sporades themselves.

However, keep in mind that Skiathos is outside the sheltered Volos Gulf, so if the weather turns rough, it can be more exposed.

    Planning Your Sailing Itinerary

There are many factors to consider when planning a sailing route, which is why we’ve chosen not to offer one fixed itinerary. Instead, we present a selection of recommended points of interest.

The best route is the one that suits you and your crew – and it may be completely different from what’s right for someone else.
Some crews enjoy covering longer distances each day, while others prefer short hops. Some seek peaceful anchorages in nature, while others look for a lively quayside and a good taverna each night. These are just a few of the personal preferences that play into building the right itinerary.

On top of that, there’s the ever-changing weather, which plays a key role in shaping your daily decisions at sea.

At Sailing Around, we believe that a flexible, responsive approach to route planning is the safest and most enjoyable way to sail.
Rather than strictly following a pre-set plan, we recommend adjusting your itinerary day by day based on the latest weather forecast. That way, you avoid sailing in uncomfortable or even unsafe conditions – or fighting against the sea when a smarter route is available.

For each region, we’ve compiled a list of recommended destinations and anchorages, so you can tailor a route that fits your sailing style – and adjust it on the go as your week unfolds.

Wishing you smooth planning and an unforgettable sailing adventure!

    The Recommended Route

    1. The Pelion Peninsula

When departing from Volos, you’ll first need to cross the large gulf formed by the Pelion Peninsula. This is a completely protected sailing area, and can serve as an excellent alternative to island-hopping on days when the weather is rough and you prefer to avoid open seas.

There are several worthwhile stops along the coastline, especially in the southern part of the peninsula. It can also be a convenient first-night anchorage after setting sail from the marina.

    1. Horto Bay

A beautiful beach set in a stunning bay, open to the west.
An excellent spot for a swimming stop and a relaxing break.

    2. Tzasteni

A breathtaking bay with two beaches and a few charming buildings along the shoreline.
A perfect lunchtime stop in a serene and scenic setting.

    3. Marjos

Another beautiful bay – quiet and surrounded by nature.
Ideal for a lunchtime stop, or even an overnight anchorage if the weather allows and you enjoy peaceful nights in natural surroundings.

    4. Trikeri

A tiny quay that can accommodate just a few boats, with no formal facilities – but a charming taverna right by the dock.
Quiet, picturesque, and full of character!

    5. Agia Kyriaki

The main marina option within the gulf for those who prefer to spend the first night in a marina rather than continue on to Skiathos or another island.

A quiet and scenic harbor, with docks lined by a charming row of tavernas – and, of course, beautiful views all around.

Note: The docks are open to the south and not fully protected. Passing ferries can also create some wake.

    2. Skiathos Island

A stunning, picturesque island – lush and green, with beautiful beaches all around.
However, it’s important to note that Skiathos is also the most touristic island in the region. During high season, it can get quite crowded with visitors arriving by ferries and flights.

    1. Skiathos Town Quay

The only marina on the island, located in the heart of Skiathos Town, which is both charming and picturesque. The quay is well-organized and scenic, surrounded by beautiful views.

The town itself is definitely worth a visit, but be aware that the marina is very small and often crowded – it can be difficult to find a spot.

It’s highly recommended to call ahead a few hours before arrival to reserve a place if possible.

Midweek, it’s sometimes possible to dock along the nearby charter company piers.
On weekends, space is extremely limited and often completely full.

    2. Krifi Ammos

A stunning beach, perfect for a swimming stop!
Note that the anchorage is open to the north, so it’s best visited in calm conditions.

    3. Kechria

A great spot for a swimming stop, and also suitable for overnight anchorage if weather conditions allow.
The area is open to the north and west, so it’s best in calm or favorable conditions.
This is a gorgeous stretch of coastline, with a few beachside tavernas nearby and stunning views all around.

    4. Lalaria Beach

One of the most famous and beautiful beaches in the region – and it absolutely lives up to its reputation.
A breathtaking turquoise bay, with dramatic white cliffs that plunge into the sea, natural rock formations, and small sea caves carved into the shoreline.

However, be aware: this is a very challenging spot to anchor and is extremely popular with tourists.
Expect crowds, especially during high season.

    5. Arkos West

A small and beautiful beach with a cozy taverna nearby.
A very pleasant spot for a lunchtime stop.

    6. Tsougkrias West

A wide and stunning stretch of beach in a peaceful, undeveloped area.
Perfect for a swimming stop, and also a great option for a quiet overnight stay in nature, weather permitting – the anchorage is completely open to the west.

    3. Skopelos Island

A large, quiet, and picturesque island – truly stunning.
It features a beautiful main town, lush green mountains, breathtaking views, ancient sites, and crystal-clear turquoise beaches.

The island is full of hidden gems and walking trails that lead to magical spots away from the bustle of the town.
It’s well worth setting aside time to explore and enjoy the island on foot.

    1. Skopelos Town Marina

A relatively large and well-organized town marina – the only one of its kind in the area.
Located in the heart of beautiful Skopelos Town, full of tavernas, narrow alleyways, and a classic Greek island atmosphere.

Highly recommended as a base for exploring the island.

    2. Agios Ioannis

A stunning bay with turquoise waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, and a tiny, charming beach.
Located just below the famous Church of Saint John (featured in Mamma Mia), with incredible views all around.

Important: The bay is completely open to the east and north, so it’s recommended only in calm weather conditions.

    3. Ekatopenidari Beach

A quiet and relatively secluded beach, off the main tourist path, with beautiful scenery all around.
An excellent spot for a swimming stop, and potentially suitable for an overnight stay, weather permitting.

    1. Limani Panormos

A well-sheltered and beautiful bay, located on the southwest coast of Skopelos.

It can get busy during the high season, so arriving early is recommended.

A great spot for overnight anchorage, with calm waters and several seafront tavernas just steps from the boat.

    4. Alonissos Island

A large island that easily competes for the title of the most beautiful in the region.
Its southern coastline is dotted with stunning beaches and bays, picturesque villages, mountain landscapes, scenic viewpoints, and an abundance of nature, peace, and quiet.

If you’re wondering where to spend a full day exploring inland or where to stay for more than one night, this is the place.

    1. Patitiri

The main marina/port town on the island of Alonissos. While there is ferry traffic and some hustle and bustle, it’s still a charming place with incredible views all around.

During high season, it’s best to arrive early if you want to secure a berth. A walk through town is a must, and we highly recommend renting a car or scooter to explore the island’s mountainous interior, breathtaking viewpoints, ancient villages, and remote beaches.

If there’s no space available, you can head to nearby Votsi

    2. Steni Vala

Not quite a full marina, but rather a small quay with space for about 15–20 boats, and no electricity or water supply.

Still, it’s an absolutely charming and peaceful spot.
A tiny village with just a few tavernas, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

    3. No Name Bay

A secluded and beautiful beach, surrounded by nothing but pure nature and the sea.
Completely off the tourist radar and free from tour boats – a highly recommended swimming stop for those who appreciate peace, quiet, and natural beauty.

    4. Chrisi Milia

A stunning bay with a well-kept, beautiful beach and a beach bar right on the shore.
Relatively well-sheltered, with gorgeous views – but very popular and often crowded during the high season.

    5. Tzortzi Gialos

Another stunning bay along the southern coast of the island, featuring a well-maintained and beautiful beach.
It can get busy during the high season, but it’s definitely worth a visit.

    6. Ormos Firakos

The most sheltered bay in the area. A beautiful beach with a tiny quay that fits one or two boats – and absolutely nothing around.
Completely off the tourist map, it’s ideal for an overnight stop if you’re looking for peace and solitude.

    ⚠️ Important note:
The northeastern area of the island, just east of this bay, is part of a protected marine reserve.
Anchoring and fishing are strictly prohibited there, as the reserve was established to protect a rare population of Mediterranean monk seals that inhabit the region.

    5. Kira Panagia Island

A small, uninhabited island with stunning natural landscapes and a few beautiful, well-sheltered bays – perfect for those who love scenery, nature, and total tranquility.

Ideal for a daytime visit, and also a great option for a peaceful overnight stay at anchor, surrounded by untouched wilderness.

    1. Baie du Monastère (Monastery Bay)

A picturesque and stunning anchorage (like all the bays on this island), with a monastery perched on the cliff above.

You can hike up to visit the monastery (note: it’s closed between 15:00–18:00). The building itself is beautiful, and you can even try local alcohol made by the resident monk.

But the real highlight? The breathtaking panoramic views from the top – absolutely worth the visit.

☀️ Note: The bay is fully exposed, except to the west – so anchoring here is recommended only in calm weather conditions.

    Planitis Bay

Located on the northern side of Kira Panagia Island, this is a fully protected and enclosed bay, accessible through a narrow entrance between two rocky arms of the island.

It’s a magical anchorage, with turquoise waters, lush green surroundings, and above all – complete peace and quiet.
This is arguably the best spot in the entire Sporades region to spend a night at anchor, immersed in nature.

The bay has two main anchoring areaseast and west – both of which are beautiful, calm, and well-suited for Mediterranean mooring.

    2. Planitis West

The more spacious of the two anchoring spots, with excellent shelter from all directions.
Ideal for overnight stays, especially when you’re looking for a calm and remote atmosphere surrounded by untouched nature.

    3. Planitis East

A narrower and more intimate cove with equally good protection.
Best suited for smaller crews or those seeking solitude. The views at sunrise here are particularly breathtaking.

    Two Additional Bays

There are also two more magical and relatively well-sheltered bays located closer to Alonissos, offering great alternatives for a peaceful stop at anchor in nature.

Perfect for a lunch break or even a quiet overnight stay, depending on weather conditions.

    4. Agios Petros

A beautiful and tranquil bay, offering good shelter and a peaceful setting.
Located just below a small monastery, the spot is known for its spiritual atmosphere and natural beauty.
A great place for a quiet anchorage, especially for those who appreciate calm surroundings and scenic views.

    5. Kyria Panagias

A peaceful and scenic bay located near the namesake chapel of the island.
It offers moderate protection and is surrounded by raw nature and steep hills, making it ideal for those looking to anchor in solitude.

A wonderful spot for a swimming stop or a quiet overnight stay, weather permitting.

    6. Skyros Island

Skyros is a somewhat remote island, located outside the main Sporades chain.
It lies about 30–40 nautical miles from Alonissos (depending on your point of departure and destination on the island), with a relatively open-sea crossing along the way.

If the weather conditions are favorable and you’re comfortable with the distance, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Skyros is a magical and less touristy island, with a landscape that is more rugged and arid in parts compared to the lush northern Sporades – but no less stunning or impressive.
You’ll find a unique old town, dramatic mountain scenery, gorgeous beaches, and an atmosphere that’s laid-back and authentic.

Surprisingly, the island has a well-organized marina offering water, electricity, and full services. It’s small, quiet, and charming – a great base for exploring inland.

Don’t miss a visit to Skyros Town, perched high on the hill. With its ancient quarter, narrow alleys, and spectacular views, it’s a true highlight of the island.

    1. Linaria Marina

A small, charming, and surprisingly well-equipped marina.
You’ll find electricity, water, restrooms, and a very friendly staff ready to assist with docking and local tips.
It’s often rated as one of the top marinas on Navily 🙂

The views are stunning, the atmosphere is peaceful and unique, and it’s the perfect starting point for exploring the island of Skyros.

    2. Ormos Foka

A beautiful and quiet bay with a lovely beach and a small church overlooking the shore.
The anchorage is well protected from most directions, except from the south.
A peaceful stop for swimming or a relaxed stay close to nature.

    3. Paralia Kolimpada

Another perfect beach for a swimming stopundeveloped, untouristed, and wonderfully peaceful.
Just you, nature, the sea, and the sand.
Located in a relatively well-protected area, it’s ideal for a calm, off-the-beaten-path break.

    4. Renes Bay

Another secluded and magical spot, located at the southern tip of Skyros.
It offers good protection from most directions, except from the south.

The landscape here is more arid and dramatic, giving the area a distinct and unique character.
There are three small and beautiful beaches, perfect for a quiet overnight stay at anchor — especially if you’ve made it this far.

Pure nature, far from the crowds.

    5. Skiropoula East

Skiropoula is a tiny neighboring island, perfect for a short stop on the way to or from Skyros.
The eastern bay offers crystal-clear waters and a peaceful setting – an ideal swimming stop for those looking to enjoy nature and tranquility off the main sailing route.
