Greek Island Symi Sailing: A Yacht Adventure from Rhodes

By Guy Yadin – A Passionate Skipper

Since 2010, I’ve been sailing in Greece, chartering yachts for at least a week each year. Over the years, I’ve spent approximately 16–17 enchanting weeks exploring the diverse islands, turquoise beaches, and charming tavernas. While I’ve also sailed in Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, and other beautiful destinations, Greece remains my favorite. The atmosphere, people, landscapes, simplicity, tranquility, and variety consistently make it the ultimate sailing destination.

This year, a dear friend invited me to sail on a private yacht—a well-equipped and luxurious Jeanneau 46 Deck Saloon. The yacht’s home port is Rhodes. Surprisingly, despite 13 years of sailing in Greece, I had never been to Rhodes. It’s not commonly featured on yacht charter maps, likely due to the limited nearby islands, longer sailing distances, and relatively open seas that can be challenging. Nonetheless, I discovered a captivating sailing area with some of the most beautiful and unique places I’ve visited in Greece.

Starting Point: Rhodes

Rhodes serves as an excellent base for yacht charters, with direct and convenient flights available from May. Upon arrival, the sea and the view of Turkey greet you immediately—a perfect welcome for a sailing week. The marina in Rhodes is located near the old city, a must-visit area for first-timers. The old city is vast, well-preserved, and blends modern development with ancient charm. It’s a significant tourist hub, offering a wide range of restaurants and shopping options. If you’re interested in exploring beaches, restaurants, historical sites, and perhaps some shopping, consider adding a day or two before or after your sailing week to explore the city and the island.

First Destination: Symi

Symi is a well-known and must-visit island for those sailing in the area. As someone who regularly charters yachts, I had always favored the area north of Kos and had never made it to Symi—until this year. I discovered a magical destination, and I can’t believe no one had told me before that I absolutely had to go there! Symi is a stunning island with diverse landscapes, turquoise bays, wild nature featuring white cliffs descending into the sea, and serene coves with occasional tavernas and small hotels. The town of Symi itself is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in Greece, with white houses scattered on the slopes around a picturesque bay, offering a genuine “wow” factor upon arrival. The town is relatively small and modest, with tavernas, bakeries, supermarkets, and charming alleys—perfect for yacht enthusiasts.

We spent three nights in Symi: two in the town and one in a bay. During our stay, we rented scooters and explored various bays, tavernas, and mountains. It was simply one of the most beautiful places! We visited at the end of May to early June, just before the peak season, so everything was still quiet and peaceful. If you enjoy anchoring in bays and plan to spend several nights on the island, I recommend one night in the town followed by nights in different bays—they’re all amazing!

Distance from Rhodes: 20 nautical miles

Next Stop: Tilos

From Symi, we continued to Tilos, a longer sail of 22 nautical miles from Symi’s western side. If you’re departing from Symi town, it’s over 30 nautical miles. Tilos is a quiet island with a tiny marina and a long, beautiful beach where you can anchor if the marina is full. The small village is peaceful and lovely, filled with charming tavernas and, most importantly, tranquility. For hiking enthusiasts, the island offers incredible trails for serious walkers. We spent two nights here before returning to Rhodes for a relaxing weekend.

Additional Destinations

If you’re open to longer sailing distances and seeking more variety, consider visiting Nisyros and Chalki. These islands offer unique experiences and are worth including in your itinerary.

Conclusion

For those who, like me, regularly charter yachts and return to Greece repeatedly, Rhodes deserves a spot on your sailing destination list. Be prepared for longer sailing distances and occasionally challenging weather, making this area more suitable for crews comfortable with extended sea hours. Regardless, Symi is an absolute must-visit destination.

Enjoy your voyage,

Guy
